SkillsXtra is a programme, managed by Bromley Education Business Partnership which provides opportunities for carefully selected students in Year 10 or above, to go on a long term work placement with a local employer. The placement is usually for one or two days a week and can last for anything from a term to two academic years.
The programme has a range of benefits for both students and employers.
Students
- gain first hand experience of an occupational sector they’re interested in working in when they leave school
- develop real employability and vocational skills
- have the chance to work towards work-based qualifications such as NVQs
- gain practical experience of subjects they are studying at school or college such as motor vehicle maintenance or hairdressing.
Employers have the chance to
- get help with basic tasks
- get a young, fresh perspective on their business
- benefit from young people’s IT skills
- keep up to date with what’s happening in schools
- find out about new qualifications
- promote vocational qualifications
- raise their profile in the community
- provide professional development opportunities for their own staff
- try out a potential new recruit
