SkillsXtra is a programme, managed by Bromley Education Business Partnership which provides opportunities  for carefully selected students in Year 10 or above, to go on a long term work placement  with a local employer.  The placement is usually for one or two days a week and can last for anything from a term to two academic years.

The programme has a range of benefits for both students and employers.

 Students

  • gain first hand experience of an occupational sector they’re interested in working in when they leave school
  • develop  real employability and vocational skills
  • have the chance to work towards work-based qualifications such as NVQs
  • gain practical experience of subjects they are studying at school or college such as motor vehicle maintenance or hairdressing.

 Employers have the chance to

  •  get help with basic tasks
  • get a young, fresh perspective on their business
  • benefit from young people’s IT skills
  • keep up to date with what’s happening in schools
  • find out about new qualifications
  • promote vocational qualifications
  • raise their profile in the community
  • provide professional development opportunities for their own staff
  • try out a potential new recruit
